I was born in New Jersey, grew up in New Jersey, and when I finished college, I got a job at the phone company. In New Jersey. After two years I realized I was trapped; if I didn’t make a serious change, I would spent the rest of my life there, die there, and get buried there.
I freaked out, quit my job, and launched on a voyage of discovery. I went to Florida, California, New Zealand, Australia. I was a cook on a prawn trawler, a bartender in a strip club, a lifeguard, a receptionist in a law office, a professional scuba diver. One frigid day in November, at 6 in the morning, climbing into cold water scuba gear, I realized that maybe a 9-5, climate controlled job in an office somewhere (even New Jersey) wasn’t as bad as it sounded.
I now have a husband, two sons, and I’m back at my old job at the phone company – in New Jersey. This time around I’m discovering how much I really like the subtle mental challenges, the teamwork of the people, and the central heating system.
Let’s hear it for central heating!
Fantastic About page. You have a great sense of humour.
Jersey!
Thanks for the compliment – writing humor is hard, I appreciate knowing that you enjoyed it.
If you are the epmatthews from Union college days, you always had a sense of humor and anything you put your mind to always seemed to be easy to you. Congrats on the book!
Hey Carl – good to hear from you! If your email is the same, I’ll bounce you a longer note. If it’s changed, you can email me, mine is still the same.
